Back to School Tour with Ellie and Mac: Tulip Dress & Tunic

By Libby Vasquez

It was a pleasure as i was getting ready for the bustle of back to school to hear of the Back to School blog tour hosted by Lo from Seams Sew Lo hosted by the Ellie and Mac patterns shop. I have well over 20 of their patterns, for everyone in my family, my son, my daughter, the hubby and of course myself. They have cute patterns, always great deals on Wacky Wednesday and a great supportive and responsive community and owner in Lindsey.

I chose the Tulip Dress and Tunic as it looked beautiful and great one piece item for the office and easy to skip into during your back to school rush. Making the project did take some effort, as you do want to ruche your fabric evenly to avoid bunches. I also took additional time to grade the waist to XL, per the measurements, as I didn’t want my mommy pouch to be unflattering but i think at a large I would’ve been fine. Also, I shortened it as I am 5 feet and the pattern was designed for a 5 ft 5 inches female. However, I didn’t want it to be too short so I adjusted it as if i was 5 ft 3 inches. Speaking of the great help in the Ellie and Mac community I also received help from their YouTube tutorial on this pattern, link here.
The cutting and instructions are fairly easy even for a beginner. I love that as you go through each piece you see your work just flowing into cuteness. The pattern is versatile as you can make a dress or tunic, change it up with 3 different sleeve options and adjust the ruching for different lengths and dramatic effect. I will be making a few more tops and dresses for the fall in large without grading. I chose a flower fabric dbp with yellow contrasting light cotton lycra as we are still in full summer weather, but chose 3/4 sleeve as it is also ending and the fall cold will be here soon.

This dress is so beautiful and very flattering for all body shapes and for anyone needing a little confidence boost. It is great for back to school too as it makes you feel and look dressed up without even having to add any accessories. I just straightened my hair, grabbed my shoes and threw on my dress. It will make you look great and feel comfortable as well as save you time with just one piece of clothing to be fetching. Can’t wait to make more this month!

  1. I like your dress! My sister is a teacher and I’ve been brainstorming Christmas gifts. We live in wyoming so winters are super cold but they are in a brand-new school I wonder if it would be too warm for a cardigan?

    1. I think it depends on your fabric. DBP is great for winter where you want a slightly warmer fabric but if you are not sure cotton lycra is a bit cooler. It is not immensely warm, I used to hate it and now LOVE IT!
