Today we are taking part of the Handmaiden’s Cottage Easter blog Tour. As always it is our utmost pleasure to be a part of it, shout out to Lo for organizing this, from Seams Sew Lo. The style of the Handmaiden’s Cottage patterns are definitely old fashioned and stand out beautifully, especially so for this season. The Hop Skip Jumper + Doll Pattern fits very well into the spring and Easter theme in its design. For that reason I wanted something floral and found this light blue with flowers cotton print in a new shop in the Fashion district, the closest I found online is here from Shabby Fabrics. It had the right Easter vibe and floral quality to feel vintage-like.
The pattern was easy to cut, done in about 5 minutes, including the doll pieces. After I cut it I realized none of my daughter’s dolls are quite 18 inches, so I may sew it when I get her one. For the skirt portions, I took the easy way out and ironed my fabric out well, then folded it in half and measured out the skirt portions in half, one right below the other to avoid measuring across.
The sewing part was easy and you don’t need much fabric. I used about 1 ¼ yards, 14 inches of ribbon and 8 inches of elastic. You truly only need your basic sewing tools. The hard part for me was the pocket elastic, I found that the bias tape we made per the instructions wouldn’t allow my pin through even though I stitched pretty close to the edges, so I removed it and rather than redo the bias with more space in between I used ribbon. It was a bit wider so it easily allowed the pin through. I am learning that gathering a skirt is one of my favorite parts of making a child dress. It is not frustrating since it is a small amount and it just looks so beautiful even as you go that you keep gathering faster. I got a bit enthusiastic and ended up snapping my thread in the middle and had to redo it but it didn’t take too long.
The sewing portion probably took about 2.5 hours with an additional 30-40 minutes to fit the elastic on the pockets, gather the skirt and center the pockets. I will be trying to make this with a knit for the experience and mixing it all up. Going with a floral print definitely brought the feel of the pattern full circle. I can’t wait to show this off Easter weekend with the family. Not sure if I should add some buttons or if it will be overboard. For now I will leave it as is.
You can find this pattern on their shop page priced at $6.99 in sizes 6-12 months to 8 years. You can also find aprons, women patterns and other great style dresses.
