8 Books and Movies for the First Day of School

Many this past week have started school, my son started last week so posts have been lax due to that change. Some are just continuing while others are having their first school experience. Some are having a great old time, while others are having a bit harder of a time. It may be mom or dad and not our kids. Below are some great movies and books to ease and get your child talking about their school experiences. Some may see similarities in their feelings or activities at school and may open up because of it.

1.Maisy Goes to Preschool by Lucy Cousins

This one helped me when I took my son to Tiny Tots for the first time. I borrowed the book about a month in advance but it is a great read any time, any year.

2. Daniel the Tiger Goes to School book or DVD

Who doesn’t love Daniel the Tiger? My children are currently obsessed with his books and movies. My daughter cries to have her tiger book in bed. I like Daniel because there is usually a positive message not just a plain story.

3. The Magic School Bus Space Adventures DVD

Ms. Frizzle may be one of the best examples of how fun learning can be with the right teacher. This may be awesome motivation for your little one. This is one even kids that don’t like school will love. Check out the new Netflix adaption with newer, up to date caricatures.

4. Bubble Guppies: Get Ready for School

Bubble Guppies are another great fun duo for small aged children. Getting ready for school is the first step into easing and comforting our children for the big day.

5. Nick Jr. Favorites: First Day of School

If you haven’t found a character your toddler would like, check out this great DVD with fun characters from Nickelodeon.

6. Amelia Bedilia’s First Day of School by Herman Parish

I loved Amelia Bedelia as a child. Boy was she funny! This book is sure to make light of the school experience and help children feel like what went on in their day was easy compared to her antics.

7.Berenstain Bears: Class is Back! DVD or The Berenstain Bears Go To School book

Another great classic. These bears are great for teaching and getting your children to talk about school. They may say their day was just fine but when reminded of activities with their favorite character’s all those conversations you wanted to hear will burst forth.

8. Time for School, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff

Oh, that Mouse! He is off to another adventure. I can’t wait to read this one myself. Always so funny and entertaining.

Happy reading and watching!!

This is brilliant thanks. My oldest starts school next week and I’m definitely more nervous than she is. Will be taking a look at a few of these.

    1. It is hard for both. I remember the first day of school with my 1st child. I wanted to hug him and cling more than he did. I would maybe sit back and record how I am feeling when in the car, save it for them later. It will help you and make a nice memory for them.

  2. Great roundup, it’s nice for kids to know any apprehensive feelings about returning to school are normal! The books make a great talking point.

    1. Thank you! I love reading with my kids and love themed books. I will be posting a Halloween one in a few weeks.

  3. I haven’t read any of these but books are the perfect way to prepare for starting school or returning to school 🙂

    1. yes, they are great. Movies are nice too for a quick chore break too 🙂
