I love reading!! Any time, any place, regardless of what is going on. As a teen I was so bad I would take books to parties and class. So of course I would want to read even when I have kids and they want my attention. Sadly our kids don’t understand I am obsessed with books, their bad not mine of course.
Well I decided I wanted my children to share this obsession of mine. I started taking my son to the library before he could talk. Funny story whenever we went without fail no matter what time he would poop five minutes within walking in. I would change him and off he went to look at the books, toys, stuffed animals. I love that they had a great toddler/baby story time.
At night I would try to read to him a book, a board book or electronic book with noises worked best. I would also try at nap time to do the same, though I was less consistent with that. As he turned a year old I would carry one or two electronic toys like the Laugh Learn Counting Puppy book and now so does my daughter. When he turned two it became a routine to read to him 3 books at nap time and bed time. Initially I used simple books like Spot books but he wanted to linger longer I started getting books like the I Can Read titles.
At breakfast I would give him a book to look at while I read. I would tell him I wouldn’t read but he could look at the pictures while we both relaxed and thought about the day ahead. I would ask him what the pictures were about and he would talk and talk and talk. Twice a week we would visit the library during toddler time and once a week we would visit Barnes and Noble and look at books. When we go for a drive both my kids take a book. Now my daughter listens in her crib while I read to my son in bed at nap and bed time. She loves taking my books, flipping the pages and pointing out the numbers at the chapters.
- Make reading fun
- Take them to fun events that include books
- Have books associated with good, happy, relaxing times
- Sneak it in wherever you can
For me the love of reading is immense and I share it with my kids sneakily into their daily lives. I see my toddler loving books already and loves checking out books. My daughter likes looking at them and is showing interest in them daily. I love it. Share your interests with your children and you will create bonds that will last forever.
